FISCAL DISCIPLINE

Avoid the Mentality of "Buy Now, Worry Later"
Our children deserve the best that we can provide. That is a limited amount. We live in a society that spends more than it earns, that I fear has permeated to our schools. Examples of such behavior are demonstrated in passing school bonds to erect new buildings when existing structures are not at capacity while other schools are overflowing. Excess when we construct beautiful new sports facilities that while impressive and something we can look to with excitement will loose over $200,000 per year.

Wisely Use What We Have
Let's discuss what is unpopular for the sake of what is right. Rezoning. No one wants to be placed into a different school. It can be difficult for you and our children. The school might be 10 minutes farther away. Ladies and gentleman rezoning is an inconvenience and can be difficult on family. It could possibly last for the duration of your child’s tenure which could last for a family many years. So many in our administration avoid upsetting families and instead turn to the public at large asking for more of your money to build structures that will cost millions of tax payer dollars so we can keep a few families within the district happy so that they don’t have to make the extra drive time. This isn’t responsible and we don’t have the money. If possible schools not at capacity should absorb those near or over capacity. It is logical and it is fiscally responsible.

Listen to All Ideas
We have some excellent resources that we don’t utilize to the fullest extent. The employees of CISD, we need our employees to feel free to speak up with ideas. Great companies listen to everyone and take the best ideas and implement them. If a bus driver has an idea that can improve the way we do business or improve working conditions that doesn’t adversely affect our children we should do it. Why not reward departments that figure out ways to improve?

Renovation & Repairs
Attending school board meetings as opened my eyes to the tactics we often go to pretending that nothing is wrong. If we ignore the problem it will go away. I know we have policies and procedures in every business but in the government work place the employees are often just as much the customer as anyone else. They live here and pay taxes just like anyone else. So if they see areas that need improvement, i.e. buses. They should indeed try and resolve the issue within the chain of command but they should also have the right to address it publicly just like we could at the board meetings. Why not, what are we afraid of? Shouldn’t we want to know what could possible be happening that affects our children. Just because an issue it brought to our attention doesn’t mean we can fix it but we should be open minded enough to want to know what others see and hear so we can make a judgment call if possible. If something terrible was to happen ignorance by choice does not clear anyone.
